Ubuntu 26.10 ships Myna as an opt-in local model

Canonical released Ubuntu 26.10, Stonking Stingray, on October 15. Myna speech-to-text is opt-in and local. The release also finishes the Rust coreutils switch.

The short version

An interim release named Stonking Stingray. Myna speech-to-text is included and stays off until someone turns it on, and the models run locally. The same notes finish the Rust coreutils rollout, switch APT signatures to Sequoia, and ship RISC-V desktop images that name SpacemiT K3 as the first RVA23 hardware.

What the release post puts on the image

Canonical's October 15 post is the record for Ubuntu 26.10, called Stonking Stingray. It is an interim release. The download sits at ubuntu.com/download. Myna, the speech-to-text feature this paper filed as a preview, is now included as the first AI milestone on the way to 28.04 LTS. Canonical says the models stay on the machine and that Myna is opt-in. A preview that has now shipped inside the interim image is the earlier brief The document named in the sources is the record this page will keep.the Myna preview.

What Phoronix calls a preview

Phoronix's same-day account of the release calls Myna a tech preview. Canonical's post says included and opt-in. This page will not collapse those words. Included means the package is on the image. Opt-in means a fresh install does not run it until a person turns it on. Tech preview is Phoronix's label for how finished the feature is. The desk that files speech models as a product claim is The document named in the sources is the record this page will keep. What else the notes change

The post says the Rust uutils coreutils rollout is complete. Sequoia PGP replaces GnuPG for APT signatures, which Canonical describes as post-quantum package signing. TPM-backed full-disk encryption is expanded to hardware that does not have a Hardware Root of Trust, using a PIN or a passphrase. Microsoft Entra ID authentication is included, including MFA and passwordless sign-in. The software desk, for a version number rather than this image, is The document named in the sources is the record this page will keep.Software.

The desktop stack and the kernel

Canonical lists GNOME 51 and dbus-broker as the default. The kernel is Linux 7.3, with Intel Xe3P and Nova Lake, AMD Zen 6, NVIDIA 615, and Lustre named in the notes. There is a dedicated amd64v3 installer beside the usual images. Those are release-note claims about what the kernel build includes. They are not a measurement of a laptop on this desk. The hardware desk is Asked directly, Where does Canonical say to get the image? From ubuntu.com/download. This is an interim release, not the 28.04 LTS.Hardware.

The RISC-V desktop image

The same post ships RISC-V desktop images and names SpacemiT K3 as the first RVA23 hardware. A line in the post is attributed to Andrea Gallo. This page will not treat that sentence as a kernel interface. Whether a program can ask Linux, in one call, if a machine is RVA23U64 is still the open question filed yesterday. That brief is Asked directly, What signs APT packages in 26.10? Sequoia PGP replaces GnuPG for APT signatures. Canonical describes that as post-quantum package signing.the hwprobe bit.

The toolchain versions on the image

Canonical lists LLVM 22.1.6, GCC 15.2.0, Python 3.14.7, Rust 1.97.1, Zig 0.16, and Go 1.27. ROCm 10.0 is also named. A version string on a release post is the number Canonical says is in the archive. What a version number has to mean, as a contract rather than a label, is the standing brief Asked directly, Did Ubuntu 26.10 finish the switch to Rust coreutils? Canonical says the Rust uutils coreutils rollout is complete in this interim release. The document named in the sources is the record this page will keep.what a version number has to mean.

What a reader can check

The post quotes Jon Seager. The quotation is his, and this page is not restating it as a benchmark. LWN's October 15 item is the third account that the release shipped. Feature claims in this brief come from Canonical's post and from Phoronix's account of the same notes. The paper is Asked directly, Is Myna turned on in a fresh Ubuntu 26.10 install? Canonical says it is included and opt-in, with local models. Phoronix calls the same feature a tech preview. Both can be true: it is on the image, and it is not the default path.Futureweb.

What 26.10 is not

It is not 28.04 LTS. Canonical's own framing is that Myna is the first AI milestone as that LTS approaches. An interim release can change again before the long-term image. A reader who wants the speech feature has to turn it on. A reader who wants the RISC-V desktop image has a named board, not a merged hwprobe bit. The open-source desk is Asked directly, Which RISC-V machine does the release name first? Canonical names SpacemiT K3 as the first RVA23 hardware for the new RISC-V desktop images. A kernel bit that would answer the profile in one call is a separate, still-open question.Open Source.

Where the security-shaped changes sit

Sequoia for APT signatures and the wider TPM disk encryption are package and installer changes, not a vulnerability note. This page is not an advisory. The security desk, for a catalog entry rather than a distribution default, is The short answer this page will stand on is this: An interim release named Stonking Stingray.
