What Eskom's 6 gigawatt qualification actually opens

Eskom RFQ E3612GXR, issued 2 October 2026, seeks partners for up to 6 gigawatts. Responses close 16 November. Eskom says it will bring solar and batteries. No plant is awarded yet.

The short version

A qualification for a five-year panel around up to 6 gigawatts of utility-scale renewables and storage, closing 16 November 2026. Eskom says it will bring at least 2 gigawatts of solar and 1 gigawatt of batteries. It does not award a plant.

What happened

Eskom issued request for qualification E3612GXR for strategic partners to develop, finance, and implement up to 6 gigawatts of utility-scale renewable projects, including solar, batteries, wind, and other renewable technologies, for five years. The RFQ cover dates the issue to 2 October 2026 and the close to 16 November 2026 at 10:00 South Africa Standard Time. Eskom's own news post, dated 9 October 2026, describes the same Phase 1 programme and says Eskom will bring at least 2 gigawatts of solar and 1 gigawatt, or 4 gigawatt-hours, of battery storage. The page filing the RFQ, not a built plant, is Futureweb.

What the RFQ is, and is not

The document is a qualification. It says respondents who qualify may later be invited to bid under a future request for proposals. It does not award a site, a tariff, or a megawatt to a named partner. Validity is four months from the closing time unless Eskom extends it. Responses go to Eskom's electronic tendering site. A nameplate rating, which this 6 gigawatt ceiling is not yet, is the standing note what nameplate capacity measures.

What Eskom's news post adds

The October 9 post says the panel is for co-development and co-investment, including projects on Eskom land and projects partners originate, subject to later governance. It says Eskom Green is still being incorporated, and that until then Eskom Holdings acts. pv magazine reported the tender on October 12. Where the magazine rounds a figure the RFQ states in gigawatts and gigawatt-hours, this page keeps the RFQ's units. The desk is Energy.

Why it matters on this desk

The qualification is a panel, not a plant. Responses that miss 10:00 South Africa Standard Time on 16 November are late, and the RFQ says late responses are not accepted. Validity is four months unless Eskom extends it. The 15 October clarification is virtual and not compulsory, so a bidder who skips it is not, on the cover, disqualified. Eskom Holdings acts until Eskom Green is incorporated. The October 9 news post is the utility's own description of the 2 gigawatt solar and 1 gigawatt storage it intends to bring. pv magazine's October 12 account is the outside check. A reader who treats the RFQ as a commissioned megawatt has skipped the word qualification. France's capacity proposal is a different grid and a different document, linked where the desk compares two open procurements in the same month. The dependency is a procurement clock: an issue date, a close, a ceiling of 6 gigawatts, and the slice Eskom says it will bring. A reader can mistake a qualification panel for a construction start. The RFQ says it is the first stage. France's capacity-auction parameters, a different country's document from the same month, are what France's long-term capacity note proposes.

What the meeting is

The RFQ schedules a virtual clarification meeting on 15 October 2026 from 11:00 to 13:00 South Africa Standard Time and marks it non-compulsory. Attendance is not a bid. A later project-specific request for proposals, which this RFQ says may follow, would be a new document. An interconnection queue, a different waiting line, is filed as what an interconnection queue holds.

What this page will not treat as built

Up to 6 gigawatts is a ceiling on the programme the partners may be invited into. At least 2 gigawatts of solar and 1 gigawatt of batteries are what Eskom says it will contribute, not what is already commissioned. Five years is the life of the panel in the RFQ, not the life of a plant. No partner is named, because the close has not happened. The hardware desk, for a chip rather than a tender, is Hardware.

What to watch next

The close on 16 November 2026 is the next date in the document. A list of qualified partners after that close would replace this page's statement that no partner is named. An extension of the four-month validity would be an Eskom notice. A magazine repeating the 6 gigawatt ceiling would not. The RFQ is the record.

What would change the record

Incorporation of Eskom Green, which the news post says is still underway, would change who signs later stages. A compulsory briefing, if a later notice creates one, would change the meeting sentence. A future request for proposals that names sites and prices would be a second story. Until 16 November the only clock this page will quote is the one printed on E3612GXR.

What stays a qualification

What stays specific is RFQ E3612GXR, issued 2 October 2026, closing 16 November 2026 at 10:00 South Africa Standard Time, for a five-year panel around up to 6 gigawatts. Eskom's October 9 post says the utility will bring at least 2 gigawatts of solar and 1 gigawatt, or 4 gigawatt-hours, of storage, and that partners may bring projects too. The clarification meeting on 15 October is not compulsory. pv magazine's October 12 report is the check that the tender was visible beyond Eskom's own site. Nothing in those pages is a commissioned plant. The next document that would move this page is a qualified-partner list or a later request for proposals. Eskom Green is not yet the contracting party the news post describes. Holdings is, until that incorporation is done.
